The graphic design software market is predominately owned by Photoshop and Fireworks. Up until recently, the two were competing against each other. However, Adobe, who makes Photoshop, recently acquired Macromedia (makers of Fireworks). It is unclear at this point whether or not the merger will kill Fireworks. What we know for sure is that today both Photoshop and Fireworks are available for purchase and the question is: which should you get? This article assumes you are at a beginner level and want to get started in graphic design for web purposes.

Both software packages are very similar in both price and functionality. There aren’t many things you can do on one that you can’t do on the other. This is even more true since the merger of the two companies. Software updates for each program has added functionality that it didn’t have before. However, the major difference lies in their abilities for the web. Fireworks, the HTML software Dreamweaver, and the animation software Flash all go hand in hand. All three are Macromedia products and use consistency as their strength. You can easily design your web page in Fireworks and then import the file into Dreamweaver for HTML editing. You can also make your own animations in Flash and add them to your web page. Although you can do almost the same with Photoshop, it’s much easier with Fireworks.

Another advantage Fireworks has over Photoshop is its ease of use. Fireworks uses a very simple point and click approach to everything. Photoshop, although similar, has a steeper learning curve. If you’re planning on learning how to design, the general consensus in the computer world is to use Fireworks first. Its ease of use lets you learn faster than Photoshop. Once you have become a seasoned veteran of Fireworks, you should then be able to make the transition to Photoshop with little to no problems.

This doesn’t mean you should abandon Fireworks once you have mastered it. Fireworks and Photoshop have just about the same features for advanced users. Without going into detail, all you need to know is that both software packages are very similar in terms of advanced features.

The future of the two software packages is still up in the air after both companies merged. That said, it is still a good idea to learn Fireworks first. Its ease of use and easy integration with other software makes it a great program for beginners and advanced users alike.
