Although this is the best way to learn, there are two major disadvantages. The first being money. A typical 3-year college program for graphics design easily costs upwards of $4,000 per year. The second disadvantage of going to school is time. Attending University or College on a full time basis is very time consuming. These are two things to consider when thinking about learning graphic design at a school.

The second way to learn graphic design is by book. There are thousands of good books that can teach you how to become a graphic designer. Using step by step simple instructions for beginners or more complex methods for intermediate or advanced designers, there is a book for every level of designer. Most books range between $40 and $100. Although this method seems cheap and affordable, you’ll find yourself having to buy multiple books to learn different aspects of graphic design. This method is great if you want to work at your own pace.

The third way to become a graphic designer is by using free online tutorials. There are many websites that offer free tutorials for graphic and web design. There are however, many sites that require you to pay for some tutorials so be careful for this. The downfall of online tutorials is that you will need to spend a lot of time with it. Most tutorials give detailed examples on only one aspect of graphic design. You will find yourself going through hundreds of free tutorials to learn simple things. This method is also great if you want to work at your own pace.

It is up to you to determine the best way for you to learn graphic design. If you have the time and money, I would suggest taking a graphic design program at College or University. However if time and/or money are an issue, I would suggest combing the second and third methods.
