Web Animation

We’ve all seen web animations while surfing the Internet. These animations are more than likely created with a software program called Macromedia Flash (or simply Flash for short). Flash animations are usually created for advertisement banners, or to add to the look and feel of a website. Animations help the website look original and less bland. This article discusses the topic of computer and web animations using Flash.

Flash is part of the Macromedia software line which includes Dreamweaver (for HTML Editing) and Fireworks (a graphics editor). If you buy the bundle the first thing you will notice after the installation is the consistency between the three programs. All three programs have interchangeable components to make learning the programs easier.

It is a common misconception that creating animations is a difficult task. This couldn’t be further from the truth. The fact of the matter is, if you have the Flash software, you can start creating simple animations right away with no problems. There are small tutorials that come with the Flash software package to help “get your feet wet” with animation. Once finished these small but useful tutorials, you can move on to more advanced learning.

There are many ways to learn Flash. Colleges and Universities usually offer special part time classes that teach the use of Flash. If this option doesn’t appeal to you, you can simply go to your nearest bookstore and buy a Flash book. There are hundreds on the market, but for beginners I would suggest picking up any of the “Teach Yourself” books. These books are made for people who want to learn Flash on their own time. They are clear and easy to use. I would suggest buying one that comes with a CD. This way you can also learn by example and see your animations running in real time.

Another good way to learn how to animate with Flash is by using online tutorials. Many sites offer free tutorials for learning Flash. This is an especially good way to learn how to make specific animations such as a person walking or a door opening and closing. Keep in mind, however, that some sites are not free and require you to pay for the tutorials. Simply move on from these sites and find something free of charge.

It is not uncommon for someone to become a self-taught expert with Flash. In fact, most of the Flash-only websites that contain games and comedic animations are made by people who have learned Flash on their own. If you have an interest in animation and think you might want to learn how, pick up Flash from Macromedia…you won’t be disappointed.
